So I was downstairs in the basement, dusting off the old record player -- my nonno's sweet German one from the 60's that is the size of a curial cabinet -- and I came across my aunt Sandra's children's record from the 70's "50 Children's favorites."
The character Breezy the bunny (pictured) is the leader in all the songs with a chorus of children answering back -- "Hey Breezy let's do that chorus again" -- sounding curiously older than the target market for this kind of music. Breezy is scary shit. He looks like he wants to eat those children instead of read and sing to them on the album cover. What kind of name is Breezy for a bunny anyhow? Rabbits are good runners, is that it?
The record includes all the classics "bah bah black sheep," "old king Cole," "twinkle twinkle" and some undiscovered now favorites of mine like "Tom Tom the farmer's son" (which goes, Tom tom the Farmer's son/ stole the farmer's pig and run/ the pig was eatin and tom was beatin'/ etc.) and sleazy sounding "Buffalo Girls" (which goes, Buffalo Girls won't you come out tonight and dance in the moonlight/ I danced with a girl with a hole in her stocking/ her heel was a' rocking/ her toe was a'knocking/ etc.). My years have ruined the fun of these songs as they take on a whole new meaning and become, well, hilarious. Oh the cynic that rises out of us in time. I also discovered "Skip to my loo." I knew the song, but never really paid any attention to the lyrics and now I have a wicked idea for a piece I'm writing (I guess I should thank Breezy).
I didn't fully waste the record player-sitting on children's vinyl however -- I also enjoyed FM's Rumours, Thriller, and A Change of Heart by Golden Avatar.
