NEWS: THE *OTHER* MARKET INDICATORS OF THE RECESSION

Anomaly because: Other than by a market analyst, these strange theories would go largely unnoticed. Thus, you would never get to laugh at the absurdity.

Did you know that skyrocketing lipstick sales are a prime indicate of the recession? Well, Matt Phillips of the Wall Street Journal blogged so on Saturday. Read the article in full here.

Are these just positive/negative correlations over analyzed or what. First thing you learn about correlations in school: they cannot be concluded as causation. Never the less, strange things like Kellogg's cereal and age, hemlines and economic activity, and, according to Phillips (and the Associated Press), the demand for cardboard boxes are theorized as connected.

Strange indeed.

NEWS: WORLD CUBE ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES FINALS WILL BE HELD IN GERMANY

Anomaly because: Everyone in the room will be able to solve that dang thing.

The World Cube Association has announced the 2009 championship will take place Oct 9-11, in the city of Düsseldorf, Germany. The competition is the association's fifth Rubik's championship worldwide. International cubing professionals will be competing in a series of rounds including one-handed, blindfolded, feet-only matches, while using cubes ranging from 4 to 7 inches cubed (the commercial Rubik is 3 inches cubed). The aim: to get the fastest time.

The wrists and nimble fingers of cube demons Erik Akkersdijk (Netherlands) and Yu Nakajima (Japan) will be something to watch out for (both average around 11 seconds). But don't expect veteran, Mátyás Kuti, to fade out. Holding the most world champion titles, this native of Hungary has a few Rubik Magic switches up his sleeve for current champion, USA's Patrick Jameson.

Cubers unite!
