Being from the Suburbs, I've always had this love/hate relationship with it. Wanting to escape it, yet wanting to capture it has been in the back of my writing-mind. Now, I have decided to compartmentalize my affections for the Burbs into a compilation of shorts.
This post is a informal call to all writers (writers, please link along to fellow writers ) who have something to say about suburban life. The aim is a collection of 14 shorts (may include poetry) revolving around the Suburbs.
If you have never lived in the Suburbs, perhaps you have a perspective of a time you visited one. If you have never known anything else, write what you know. The book is meant to capture suburban life, but not to plunge a dagger into its heart. I don't want the message to be "suburbia sucks...it is cookie cutter and fake". No No. That can be one individual's perspective, but I don't want the book to be angsty. I just want it to be true.
The plan is to edit the collection myself and send it around for publishing. It will be property of all the contributors, with myself as the editor. And so, if picked up the profits will be split completely even between all contributors. Sound good?
I'm asking for short stories and a few poems touching on suburban life. The genre will be fiction, but I don't want fantasy (i.e, a tale about wizards living next door). Right now I'm calling the project: "Suburban Wonderland." Submissions should be in by November 1st. Any hopeful contributors, please contact me via Gmail (andrea.m.grassi@gmail.com) with the subject title "Suburban Wonderland" and your story in a MS Word doc.
